Wild horses

Zoo Berlin is home to female Przewalski’s horses Bonita and Bine, who both live in the tranquil extension area over the Lichtenstein Bridge.

The last truly wild takhi, as the horse is known in its native Mongolia, was spotted in the 1960s, after which these animals almost completely disappeared from the face of the Earth. It is only thanks to expertise, determination, and plenty of patience that these horses can now be seen roaming wild in their native habitats once more. The reintroduction of the Przewalski’s horse into the wild is one of the most successful species conservation efforts ever coordinated by zoos.

Speaking of Przewalski’s horses, we have an exciting book recommendation for you: Auf der Suche nach den wilden Pferden (In search of wild horses) written by author Stefan Schomann and published by Galiani Berlin. One of the many places Stefan visited on his quest was Tierpark Berlin, where he also recently presented his new book in Friedrichsfelde manor house.
