Sea Lion Cow Doro Passes Away Unexpectedly

On 1 September, 10-year-old sea lion cow Doro died unexpectedly in Zoo Berlin. The cause of the sudden death of the sea lion, as can now be revealed by the doctors of the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, was a bacterial intestinal infection by clostridia. All sea lions at Zoo Berlin are currently being tested for the pathogen as a precautionary measure.

The loss is particularly sad for little Aileen: "Doro gave birth to a female sea lion three months ago. We immediately accustomed little Aileen to a daily ration of fish slurry to switch her to solid food as soon as possible", reports vet Dr. André Schüle. Aileen will live behind the scenes in a separate pool as long as this is the case. However, she isn't exactly lonely here. She can visit the other sea lions Enzo, Sandra and Co. anytime.

The female sea lion currently weighs approx. 18 kg. The quicker Aileen gets used to the still-unfamiliar fish slurry – as a substitute for her mother's milk – the sooner she will get back to romping around with her sea lion gang.

Sea lions usually receive their offspring during the summer months and care for them in the most heartwarming manner. Born on land, sea lion babies only learn how to swim and dive from their parents on a step-by-step basis. The very intelligent aquatic animals live in the wild in colonies off the coast of California all the way down to Mexico. Sea lions reach approx. 18 years in the wild but can even reach up to the ripe old age of 30 in human captivity.

The Californian sea lions in Zoo Berlin have been a popular visitor attraction for many years – the daily show is a particular highlight for the many guests. Sea lion bull Enzo (15 years) can currently count the three sea lion cows Conny (12 years), Lucia (13 years) and Sandra (11 years) among his harem and is the proud father of the two youngsters born in July – Aileen and Hermann.
