Polar Bear Week at Zoo and Tierpark Berlin

Cuddly ambassadors for climate protection

On the occasion of this year’s Polar Bear Week, visitors to Zoo and Tierpark Berlin can look forward to a cuddly surprise: from now until 16 November – the birthday of both the Zoo’s venerable polar bear Katjuscha and Tierpark’s polar bear mama Tonja – anyone purchasing an online annual pass will also receive a free polar bear soft toy.

The majestic white bears are threatened with extinction, due primarily to habitat loss as a result of global warming. The melting ice caps have made finding food and a mate increasingly difficult for the land carnivores. Zoo and Tierpark Berlin are supporting Polar Bears International with its research into altered breeding and hunting behaviour, as well as into the bears’ preferred retreats and migration routes in the wild. For example, scientists are placing cameras in the birthing dens of polar bears to find out when the mother leaves the den with her young, and how many cubs survive to this stage. Zoos are helping to save the polar bear by supporting this basic research with financial and human resources. The goal is to establish long-term protected areas where polar bears can find sufficient food and rear their young in peace.

Details about the giveaway

Anyone purchasing or renewing an online annual pass for Zoo, Tierpark or Aquarium Berlin in the time period from 2 to 16 November 2021 will also receive a polar bear cuddly toy when they collect their pass from the ticket booth (while stocks last).
