Soon, our two tapirs will be leaving their shared South American habitat and moving to the Rhino Pagoda. Their new home encompasses around 14,000 m² of marshy grassland, where they will live alongside Indian rhinoceroses and Visayan warty pigs.
Lowland tapirs are classified as “Vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The largest mammals in South America, tapirs are hunted for their meat and hide. What’s more, the natural habitat of the lowland tapir is being increasingly lost to deforestation.
