The zoo's oldest surviving building, the Antelope House, was opened by Kaiser Wilhelm I in 1872. The famous Three Emperors' Meeting also took place there in 1873. The building was based on the animals' countries of origin - antelopes & co. have always lived there. However, there used to be a much larger number of them: behind each of the 21 brown doors was an animal enclosure. Today, the number is much smaller and the animals enjoy more space. The building was badly damaged during the Second World War, but not completely destroyed. In 1984, the antelope house was reconstructed under director Klös.

Zoo Berlin is aware of its responsibility, which is why there is a permanent exhibition on the history of the zoo in the Antelope House, which was compiled by historian Dr. Clemens Maier-Wolthausen. The chapters of the zoo's history that give cause for critical reflection are not ignored.
