A Chinese legend tells that they wore black armbands out of grief for a shepherd boy and rubbed their eyes and ears with them, creating the spots. Another story says that the pandas received their colours as a gift from the gods to symbolise the balance between light and darkness. However, researchers say that the fur pattern serves as camouflage and the black ears as a deterrent.
