Artist Uwe Thürnau derives his inspiration from nature ‒ observing animals and photographing landscapes. He examines and experiences his surroundings before bringing the whole thing together on paper, then uses paintbrushes and artificial rocks to create animal habitats that recall those in the wild. Over the past weeks, Thürnau has been shaping rocky landscapes and lush forests for the leopards and tigers that will be moving into the Predator House next year. Thürnau is no stranger to working at Zoo Berlin as he painted large display boards here around 45 years ago. We decided to take a peek at what he has been up to.
