Record number of visitors to Zoo Berlin

Zoo Berlin AG bid farewell to 2014 with a record number of visitors and looks forward to a successful 2015. More than 4.4 million guests visited the Zoo, Aquarium and Tierpark over the past year. This is an increase of 6.4% to the Zoo over the year before. The Tierpark even had a year-on-year increase of 12% compared to 2013. A success that's plain to see and which puts Zoo Berlin AG at the top of the most popular leisure activities in Berlin and Brandenburg.

Top of the table in the zoo rankings

This good result is confirmed by the world's largest travel site Tripadvisor in the current Zoo rankings: Zoo Berlin takes top spot and is thus considered the most popular zoo in Germany.

In the Zoo:

The preliminary planning for the Carnivore House is in process. The start of construction is planned for 2015. Tigers, lions and Co. can look forward to better conditions in which they are kept from 2017.
• The renovation of the Löwentor entrance will begin after the summer holidays (September) and will provide for a much quicker entrance and shorter waiting times from summer 2016. The number of ticket offices is doubling (four up to now, from 2016: eight).
• The optimisation of the Elefantentor entrance and the integration of a shop will run parallel to this. The planning application for the renovation has been made. The renovation work can begin once this is approved.
• The presentation quality will be modernised in the Bird House. Zoo guests shall be brought closer to the theme of birds and flies with entertaining teaching methods.
• The park lighting across the zoo will be switched to LED technology by the summer of 2015.
• A new orientation system is also to be implemented in the zoo by the summer holidays.
• The leading global Wild Republic brand will operate the shops throughout Zoo Berlin AG from now on. As a global player, the company shall professionalise the merchandising market in the Zoo and Tierpark and will provide extra income as a tenant. You'll find everything in the new Tierpark shops at the Bear Viewing Window entrance and at the Pachyderm House, from keychains to teddy bears. Wild Republic will also initially provide provisional shop containers/kiosks in the zoo at the Löwentor entrance, next to the Zoo School, at the Bird House and at the playground that will be operated as an interim solution until the renovations of the entrances are complete.

In the Aquarium

• A new ventilation system on the first floor of the aquarium shall ensure a better indoor climate from summer 2015. All reptile display cases will gradually receive contemporary furnishings over the next two years.

'As Supervisory Board Chairman of Zoo Berlin AG and Tierpark Berlin Friedrichsfelde GmbH, I am very proud of these impressive visitor numbers. As the most visited tourist attraction in Berlin, the zoological institutions in Berlin have managed to uphold a leading position,' says Frank Bruckmann with delight.

'Many projects are currently running simultaneously and it is very challenging to keep all the balls in the air,' explains Zoo and Tierpark director Dr Andreas Knieriem. 'Most of the projects are currently pending in the Tierpark and are being supported by subsidies from the state. This support, which I'm very happy about, is nevertheless associated with corresponding deadlines, through which the implementation of the measures may be delayed. I can only appeal to your patience. It'll be worthwhile in the end, especially for our visitors.'
