Meng Meng takes great care of the twins

In their natural habitat, a panda mother can only raise one cub.

In the case of twin births, which occur in about 50% of cases, this means that one of the cubs would die. In the zoo, we have the opportunity to save this second cub. To ensure that both cubs grow up as naturally as possible, with the mother’s milk and maternal care, the cubs are alternated with the mother. This way, Meng Meng always cares for one cub at a time, which doesn’t overwhelm her. Meanwhile, the other cub is sleeping in the incubator. When it wakes up and wants to drink, it is brought to Meng Meng. This is an established approach from both animal welfare and conservation perspectives.
