Max the research assistant

Our giraffe bull Max is helping scientists better understand the way giraffes communicate.

Max is the only giraffe in Europe who has been successfully trained to wear a halter on its head. A mini audio device inside the halter records the sounds that Max makes and sends them to Dr Anton Baotic of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. You can see exactly how the whole thing looks and works in the video.

Max’s role as research assistant is not entirely new. He was part of another project back in 2018 that aimed to better understand the behaviour of giraffes in the wild and use that information to derive better measures for their protection.
