A new man in town

In late April, 18-month-year-old lowland nyala Johannes came to us from ZOOM Erlebniswelt in Gelsenkirchen. Since his arrival, he has been living with our six-year-old nyala female.

It’s easy to tell the males and females of this antelope species apart. Firstly, the males sport horns and a mane whereas the females do not. Also, there are clear differences in colour: the coat of the male is more slate grey, whereas females are predominantly reddish-brown. However, males and females start life looking exactly the same. This protects young male nyalas from being driven out of the herd by dominant elders.
