Lots going on with our small-clawed otters

Our small-clawed otters receive daily training. As well as being great fun, the activities also exercise the otters’ bodies and minds.

A whistle and treats are the most important tools for the keeper who trains the otters. And there’s an additional benefit to the daily sessions: they allow the keepers to get closer to the animals, which makes it easier to keep an eye on their health and provide medical treatment when needed.

A male otter recently moved in with our female. Once he has fully settled in, he will also join in with the training. First he must develop a trusting relationship with the trainer, as this is an essential element for successful training.
