Hey there, fluffy fella!

Could this be the cutest thing on two legs? After eight years without any new offspring, our lesser flamingos have finally hatched a chick.

The fluffy newcomer recently left the nesting island for the first time. In the first few weeks of their lives, flamingo chicks are fed on “crop milk” – a high-protein, high-fat, high-energy secretion that both parents regurgitate and feed to their young. The chicks’ bills are not yet sufficiently developed to allow them to feed using the flamingos’ famous filter technique.

You can pay a visit to the chick in our Pheasantry, where the lesser flamingos live alongside the Andean flamingos and James’s flamingos. There are currently two other pairs incubating eggs there.
