Today is World Penguin Day

In March, the four king penguins Ungane, Umber, Noah and Carina came to us from Zoo Zurich. Their arrival takes the total number of king penguins living in our Penguin Hood to nine. The group share their home with rockhopper penguins.

Climate change is causing the polar ice to melt. But Antarctic species like the king penguin need the ice to survive. And they are not the only penguins threatened by climate change: Humboldt and African penguins live near cold ocean currents where there are lots of fish. Global warming is changing those ocean currents, driving away the fish and making it hard for the birds to find enough food.
