Today is World Giraffe Day!

Reason enough to give a little extra attention to Zoo Berlin’s long-necked residents Max and Mugambi.

The IUCN Red List classifies giraffes as threatened. Zoo and Tierpark Berlin are therefore supporting the efforts of the Wild Nature Institute to protect giraffes in Tanzania. In order to develop effective protective measures, the Institute is conducting long-term studies on the births, deaths and movements of more than 4,000 giraffes.

Also, Dr Anton Baotic is carrying out research to better understand the animals. For years, he has been investigating the way giraffes communicate – and our giraffe bull Max is assisting him in this important work. To mark World Giraffe Day, the biologist will be giving a talk today at 4:30 p.m. at Tierpark Berlin. The event will be broadcast live on our joint YouTube channel as well as on the Tierpark’s Facebook page.
