Big-mouthed babies

Today we take a look behind the scenes at the World of Birds, where our frogmouths are currently raising two chicks.

We don’t yet know their sex, so our keepers are randomly calling them Alberta, Rudi or Einstein as the mood takes them.

Because frogmouth claws are not strong enough for them to hunt with, these birds have an extraordinarily wide mouth that they use to catch insects in flight. The new chicks only hatched in late June, but their wide beaks are already very evident.
