Weighing in at around three kilos and standing roughly 70 cm tall, African penguins are one of the smallest penguin species. Sadly, the dapper little birds are listed as “Endangered” on the IUCN Red List. Over the past century, the number of spectacled penguins has fallen by about 90 percent.
One reason for this is overfishing by humans. The penguins are having to travel further and further afield to find enough food for themselves and their chicks. To make matters worse, they frequently get tangled up in fishing nets as unwanted bycatch.
