As a precautionary measure to stem the spread of coronavirus infections, new government rules apply in the state of Berlin from 2 November 2020. The implications for Zoo, Tierpark and Aquarium Berlin are as follows:
- Aquarium Berlin and all animal houses at Zoo and Tierpark Berlin will be closed. The same applies to Friedrichsfelde manor house and all walk-through animal habitats, including the petting zoo.
- Guests must wear nose and mouth coverings during their entire visit.
- Some cafés and restaurants at the Zoo and Tierpark will remain open for the sale of takeaway food and beverages.
- There will be no commentated feeding sessions.
- The Tierpark’s electric train will not be running.
- The Weihnachten im Tierpark Christmas illuminations event has been cancelled.
The expansive parkland of Zoo and Tierpark Berlin will remain open to visitors during regular opening hours (9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). And both facilities have plenty of space – at 160 hectares in size, Tierpark Berlin is the biggest animal park in Europe. Weather permitting, most of the animals will be on view in their outdoor habitats. Of course, general coronavirus conduct and hygiene rules will continue to apply at the Zoo and Tierpark, and Director Dr Andreas Knieriem appeals to all visitors to adopt responsible behaviour: “Once again, we implore our guests to buy their tickets online, to keep their distance from other people, and to wear a mask throughout the entire Zoo and Tierpark. That’s the only way our facilities can remain open during this time.” Aquarium and Flex tickets that have already been purchased for dates after 2 November will be automatically cancelled, and the purchasers will be informed.
Berlin’s zoos are some of the most popular in the world. Last year, around 5.5 million people from all over the world visited Zoo and Tierpark Berlin. Although the current situation is having a devastating financial impact on Berlin’s zoos, the care of their approximately 30,000 animals is guaranteed.
