Skylights for a sunny Panda Plaza
Just two weeks after the topping-out ceremony at the Panda Garden, the huge crane is no longer needed. It is now being carted off site – which can only mean one thing: the roof is complete! This week, final sealing work will be carried out to make sure the pandas stay warm and dry even in heavy rainfall.
Four oval-shaped openings in the roof will fill the plaza with natural light to ensure the grey concrete structure isn’t dark and gloomy for the pandas and their visitors.
The light and airy Panda Plaza will also provide the perfect conditions for bamboo. These sweet grasses will grow to form a tall, green backdrop to the viewing benches, so visitors can enjoy an oriental ambience as they sit and watch the bears in comfort.
Interior construction work is also making good progress: the walls are standing and the house is already being plastered from the outside.
For all those who could not attend the topping-out ceremony, we have put together a highlight reel from the event that includes the traditional topping-out speech, the welcome addresses given by the developers and our special guests, and the hammering in of the symbolic final nail (or in this case, the final four nails).
