A giant tent for our giant pandas
Has Christo been to the zoo or will our pandas be camping out?
Just to be clear: artist Christo has not paid a visit to the zoo to create his latest “wrapped” artwork, nor will the pandas be going camping. The tent has actually been erected to ensure that the panda palace will still be ready by summer, despite the icy conditions. The white tarpaulin is covering the building while bricklaying continues to protect it from winter temperatures – which, over the last couple of days, have dropped to well below freezing. Two heaters maintain a constant “indoor” temperature of 5˚C – so still not exactly snuggly warm for the construction workers. Appropriate clothing is crucial when working in this weather.
A few metres away, the round pavilion is slowly taking shape. Here, too, the concrete is protected from the cold and rain, with a blue insulating sheet.
